William Jay was born, March 26, 1835 in Walker Co., GA to Jesse Jay and Rachel T. Charles Jay. In 1856, he married Emily A. Culberson in Hall county, Georgia. On May 3, 1862, he enlisted in the Confederate Army, Company C, 60th Regiment of the Georgia Infantry. On May 5, 1864, Private William Jay gave his life for the Confederacy when he was killed in the Battle of the Wilderness, near Spotsylvania, Virginia.

For glory lights the soldier's tomb,
And beauty weeps the brave."
