Mary A. Coons died Dec. 18, 1992 in Washington, D.C. She was born in Silver Lake and grew up in North Manchester. She was a graduate of Chester Township schools and Ball State University. She taught in Marion Community Schools and was an elementary education teacher for Muncie Community Schools until her retirement. She then taught first grade at St. Lawrence Catholic School until 1979. She became a volunteer working with reading groups and tutoring, taught evening adult classes at the Muncie Area Career Center, and was director of the Psi Iota Psi Day Nursery. She was a member of the High Street United Methodist Church in Muncie.

Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline Ramey and Dr. Janelle Goetcheus, and a son, John L. Coons.
