WORCESTER - Sister Mary A. Cornwell, 99, of the Sisters of Notre Dame, died Monday, December 2, 2013 at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester.

Born in Dorchester, Sister Mary was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Harrington) Cornwell.

She was a 1953 graduate of Emmanuel College, Boston, majoring in English and History. In 1965, she earned a master's degree in reading education from Boston College.

She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1931, and was known in religious life as Sister Ann Joseph.

Sister Mary was an educator for 46 years. For 23 years from 1969 to 1982, she was a reading specialist in the Boston Public Schools. Previously, she was an elementary school teacher at Notre Dame schools in Springfield, Lawrence, Beverly, South Boston, Newton and Honolulu. She also taught at Emmanuel College and the former Boston State College.

Sister Mary retired in 1993 after ten years of ministry supporting social work at a Veterans Administration clinic and the Long Island Shelter, both in Boston.

Sister Mary was predeceased by her three sisters, Dorothea Casey, Rosella Marie Delaney and Loretta O'Leary, and her two brothers, John and Joseph Cornwell.

She leaves many nieces and nephews, and her sisters in religion, the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Calling hours are Thursday, December 5 starting at 12:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 1 p.m. at the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester. The funeral Mass will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will be at Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery, Worcester.
