THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana
James R. ALLEN, son of Hiram and Mildred ALLEN, was born in Daviess County, January 29, 1846, and died at his late home at Mineral March 19,1925, aged seventy-nine years, one month and twenty-nine days.
He was married to Margaret O'DONALD on June 24, 1866. To this union was born four children, William ALLEN, surviving, while Florence, Ephraim, and Hiram, are deceased. He was married a second time to Elizabeth DISHMAN on November 26, 1882. The five children by this marriage are D. Lonnie ALLEN, living at the home place, Mrs. Susannah DENNIS and Mrs. Etta JONES, of Bloomfield; Johny, deceased, and Elmer, recently married, and living at home. Elmer and his good wife did all in their power to make their parents comfortable and happy and their loving faithful and untiring service will be rewarded by Him who said "Honor thy Father and thy Mother that thy days may be long upon the earth." Through the long illness Mr. ALLEN was patient and willing to do what was best no difference what the sacrifice, and he often expressed his thankfulness for his good children and their great care for him through his sickness.
When the north and south parted and the war cloud draped this country in mourning, he answered the call and marched away in his young manhood to serve that this union might be preserved one and undivided. He enlisted in the service of his Master at a meeting held by Rev. George T. SMITH at Koleen, thirty-five years ago, and has since been marching as a Christian soldier to the music of "What a friend we have in Jesus," and Tarry with me, oh, my savior," these being his favorite hymns.
He was a farmer by profession, and lived most of his life in the community where he was well known and loved for his honesty, uprightness of character, his kindness, congenial (though unassuming) disposition, his willingness to do for others. He was a devoted husband and father, accommodating neighbor, a good friend and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
He is not far away, but nearer his loved ones by one body less and for all your kindness and loving ministrations, there will be added strength and measure of light for you through the waiting time until you meet and say Good Morning.
The funeral was held at the Walnut Grove Church, conducted by Elder T. A. COX, last Sunday afternoon. Interment in the Mood Cemetery.
