Nellie Mae Bawn was born December 20, 1890, the daughter of Newton and Caroline Melvina Duer Bawn, at Parkersburg. She attended country school in rural Wright County, and graduated from the Eagle Grove High School in 1908.

She was united in marriage to Clarence Emerson of Eagle Grove on December 29, 1909, at Eagle Grove. The couple made their home southwest of Eagle Grove. She taught at the Derscheid country school where she was educated as a youth. The couple retired from farming in 1960, when they moved to Eagle Grove. Mr. Emerson died in 1964.

She continued living in their home until moving to Rotary Ann Nursing Home, Eagle Grove, on June 17, 1977.
She was a member of the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Troy Culture Club.

Nellie Mae Emerson died at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home August 11, 1992, at the age of 101 years, seven months, and 20 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Gerald and Dr. Orin Emerson; a granddaughter; and her brother, George Bawn. She is survived by two sons, Dr. Wayne Emerson, Eagle Grove, and Dr.. Dale Emerson of Ottumwa; a daughter, Mrs. Maurice (Joan) Whitmer of Wilton; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 15 at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. The Rev. David Miller officiated at the 11 a.m. services and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Kastler-Babcock Services, Eagle Grove, was in charge of the arrangements.
