Death of Former Johnson County Resident
[reprinted from Columbus Republican]
Mrs. Mary Ann Graham died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William B. Treadway, at 621 Mechanic street, Wednesday at 9:45. The end to years of suffering came peacefully, so peacefully in fact, that the good woman simply went to sleep to awaken on the other shore. For the past nineteen years she had been an invalid, suffering from rheumatism. Recently her condition became more critical, but her wonderful vitality still held her up. An attack of erysipelas was the immediate cause of death.
The late Mrs. Graham was a daughter of John and Vilinda Irwin, and she was born in Bartholomew County, October 10, 1833. The family moved to Johnson county when she was three years old. She was married in that county to Felix W. Graham in 1848. Mr. Graham served with distinction in the Fourth Indiana Cavalry. He died April 9, 1902.
Following the marriage of Colonel and Mrs. Graham, they lived in Johnson county, near Franklin, where the husband had a farm and saw mill, and where he was also interested in stock buying. In 1871 they moved to DeKalb county, Missouri, but returned to Indiana in 1873. After Col. Graham's death the widow made her home alternately with her three daughters.
Five children were born to Col. and Mrs. Graham, of whom four survive. The youngest, Mrs. Thomas Morris, died in 1886 and is buried in the City cemetery. The surviving children are Mrs. Treadway of this city; Mrs. C. W. Granger of Noblesville; Mrs. Fred A. Brown of Eustice, Florida, and Amory T. Graham of Jacksonville, Florida. The only surviving member of the family of which Mrs. Graham was a member is Joseph I. Irwin, her brother.
