Philander was the youngest child of Lyman Ellithorpe(1806-) & his wife Fanny Griggs(1809-)

Philander enlisted 5/3/1861 into the Civil War. On 5/21/1861 he was at Elmira, NY as a Private under Capt Henry Runyan's Company & Capt C C Gardner's Company, Colonel John Fisk commanding & he then was promoted for meritorious service to Corporal on 3/1/1862 & then to Sergent 3/1/1863. He then was discharged with the company. Later he rejoined in the 2nd Mounted Rifles. He was severely wounded @ Petersburg, Virginia on 6/17/1864 & was discharged 7/20/1865 from the USA General Hospital in Chester, Pa. by reason of loss of arm by wounds received in action @ close of War.

He was the "Unknown Soldier" in Rushford Cemetery

His mother is buried next to him in Rushford Cemetery.
