Chalopin, the well known contracting painter, returned from a visit to his old home near Rouen, France, on Monday, and bringing with him his niece, Miss Lucian Chalopin who recently lost her parents, and leaving behind her sister, Gabrielle, who is anxiously awaiting news of her betrothed. He went with the first French troops and for several months no word has come from him. He may be in the world beyond or taken prisoner by the Germans. She believes he will return and she wants to be the first to greet him on his homecoming.
Mr. Chalopin left here on January 17th to settle the estate left by his brother and to bring his nieces back With him. He was several miles away from the fighting line. In Paris he saw in the air hundreds of aeroplanes on scout duty and he was surprised to see large quantities of war munitions from the U. S. carried by the French railroads. He left Bordeaux on Dec. 18th on the steamer Rochambeau and had a very stormy passage lasting twelve days, arriving in New York glad to be back on land again.
