"For extraodinary achievement in aerial combat lst Lt. Joseph Pearce was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in European Theatre on October 14, 1944."

Lt.Pearce a B-17 pilot with the 381st Bomber Group of the 8th Air Force also holds the Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters.

In 6mths overseas he completed more than 35 daylight heavy bombardment missions against German targets. At the age of 24.

He enlisted as a private in the Army Air Force, dropping out of the University of Pennsylvania after one year, and was trained as a radio operator before transfering to aviation cadet training. He won his "wings" and commission on November 3, 1943 at Seymour, Indiana.

He was a graduate of Milford High School, class of 1937, lettering in basketball. He returned to Milford after the war and became the Postmaster until his retirement.
