Joseph Willis Cowles was born 15 September 1884 in Cooweescoowee District, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory West (now Oklahoma) to James Cornelius Cowles and Martha Adeline England. Joseph married Neva Osburn in 1906, and they moved with Joseph's family to Chico, California about 1909. Joseph and Neva were the parents of five children: Carl Joseph, Ida May, Homer Roy, and twins Myrl Leonard and Myrtle Lee. Joseph died in 1951 in Salinas, Monterey County, California, and he is buried in the Monterey County Potters Field Cemetery.
