A planter at Beaver's Hill near Dunbrooke, he enlisted as 2nd Sergeant of Company F of the 55th Regiment of Virginia Infantry on 17 July 1861. He served as Acting Post Commissary and Quartermaster at Fort Lowry. He was in command of the picket at Meadow Bridge when General Lee's wife was returning to the Confederacy there on 10 June 1862. He declared himself "Heartily sick of the war," but willing "to suffer any hardship rather than submit to the abolitionists." Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 24 June 1862, he was wounded leading a charge at Frayser's Farm on 30 June. The wound paralyzed him below the chest. He died in Richmond after being promoted to Captain, leaving a widow, Mollie, and three little girls in mourning.
