On June 25, 1996, terrorists bombed Khobar Towers, a housing unit near Dhahran, Saudia Arabia, shortly before 10 P.M. local time, killing 19 Air Force personnel and injuring hundreds of other Americans. A1C Christopher B. Lester was one of the airmen killed that day. The slain airmen were part of the effort in patrolling the air over southern Iraq and detering Iraqi aggression in Operation Southern Watch. Air Force guards posted on top of a nearby building suspected a terrorist activity in progress when the driver of a fuel truck parked next to the northern perimeter fence and fled from the scene in a nearby car. An immediate evacuation of the building ensued, but before the evacuation could be completed, an explosion with the force of 20,000 pounds of TNT sheared the face of the building.
