Charles Richmon Johnson, 86, of Candler, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at St. Joseph's Campus, Mission Hospital.

Born July 4, 1927 and raised in Swannanoa, he was a son of the late Jennings and Annie Mae Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in WWII. He held an undergraduate degree in history and education, and received a Master's Degree in Education from Western Carolina University. Mr. Johnson coached at Enka High School, and was a former principal at Emma, Sand Hill, and Candler Elementary Schools. After retirement, Mr. Johnson served on the Buncombe County Board of Education for 8 years, and served as chairman for 4 of those years. A devoted family man, he was a loving husband, father, and proud grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mollie Hamlin Johnson; daughters Sandra Karen Jaquette and husband Don, and Patricia Lynn Johnson; grandchildren Justin and Nicole Jaquette; sister-in-law Marsha Thomas; and sisters Doris Fox and Dorothy Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Beth Darling officiating. Private interment will be at Green Hills Cemetery.
