Opal Smith
Opal B. Smith, 87, of 2110 8th Avenue, died Friday evening, October 25, 1996, at the Rocky Mountain Care Center following a brief illness.
Opal was born in Dallas, Texas, on July 22, 1909, as one of five children to Virgil A. and Georgia Ann (Morris) Bobbitt.
She graduated high school in Wills Point, Texas, and continued her education at East Texas State Teachers College at Wesley College, Texas. Opal also attended the University of Miami, before receiving her bachelor's degree at the University of South Carolina.
Opal married Sherman W. Smith on September 21, 1935, in Helena. Sherman preceded her in death on September 8, 1952.
Opal worked as an executive secretary for the Helena Chamber of Commerce for 21 years. She was very active in her civic organizations in Helena. She was a member of the National Press Women's Association, the Last Chance Press Club, the Montana Club, the Garden Club, a member and past president of the Lewis and Clark County Cancer Committee and was on the board of directors of the Wilson Foundation. Earlier in Opal's life, she enjoyed skiing, tennis, and golf.
In addition to her husband, Opal was preceded in death by her three sisters and a brother.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard "Dick" and Darlene Smith, of East Helena; her two grandsons, Timothy and Sherman Smith; seven step-grandchildren, twenty-one greatgrandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may pay their respects from noon to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Retz Funeral Home. Funeral services for Opal will be on Tuesday, October 29, at 2:30 p.m. at the Retz Chapel, with Reverend Dave Orendorff of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Forestvale Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Lewis and Clark County Cancer.
