1st Lieutenant Samuel L. Shellenberger was from Mackinaw, Tazewell County, Illinois. He was mustered in as a Sergeant in Company B, 3rd Illinois Volunteer Cavalry in August 1861. A promotion to 1st Lieutenant was attained in October 1862. Most operations of the 3rd Cavalry were in Missouri, Arkansas, and Mississippi losing several men. The 3rd Cavalry was consolidated and 1st Lieutenant Shellenberger was commanding Company F in October 1862. He mustered out on October 10, 1865 as a Captain.
Mackinaw, May 14. — (Special.) — Samuel L. Shellenberger, a former resident of Mackinaw, died in St. Louis yesterday, and the remains were brought to this city last evening for burial.
Samuel L. Shellenberger was born In Allegheny county, Pennsylvania in 1840, and at the age of 11 years came to this state and made his home with his parents, north of Mackinaw. He was a graduate of the schools of Mackinaw. Later he was married to Miss Anna Kennedy. Mr. Shellenberger enlisted in the spring of 1861, and was promoted to the office of major, and was a prisoner of war. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Boyd, and one brother, O. S. Shellenberger, both of Denison, Tex.
