Irene was born to Sophia Waldmann and husband Charles Zander in Chicago, IL. Charles died when Irene was only two years old. Sophia remarried to William Lange, who then adopted Irene as raised her as his own daughter. Sophia and William had a son, William Jr.

Irene married Byron Lloyd Benner on May 18, 1921 in Illinois. They made their home in Maywood, IL, where they raised two daughters, Charlotte and Margaret.

Irene was known for her fruitcakes at Christmas, pouring many rounds of rum over the top of each cake.

After retirement, Irene and Byron moved out to Lancaster, CA to spend their remaining years in the sunshine.
