George W. "Bill" Snyder

WALDO: George W. "Bill" Snyder, age 86 of Waldo, passed away Tuesday evening, December 24th, 2013, at the Marion Manor nursing home.

George was born February 8, 1927 to Grover and Cleah (Harmon) Snyder of Marion. He graduated from Waldo High School in 1944 and entered the U.S. Army where he was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. Following the war he married Jane Dutt in 1947 and they were together nearly 66 years, until her death less than two months ago.

After graduating from Bowling Green University, George became a lifelong salesman of insurance and real estate. He was a licensed real estate broker with his own office in Waldo.

He was also a public servant, spending many years as both city councilman and Mayor in Waldo. He also served one term as a Marion County Commissioner.

He was a member of the Porter-Snyder Legion post in Waldo, a post partly named for his brother John, who was killed in World War Two.

He enjoyed reading, politics, tennis and his many friends. It was said of him more than once that he "never met a stranger."

He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends, including his three children, John (Nancy) Snyder of Wichita, Kansas, Thomas Snyder of Marion, and Kathy (Jim) Swalwell of Waldo; six grandchildren: Dr. Ryan Snyder, Cary Snyder, Kyle Snyder, Scott (Ashley) Snyder, Allison (Dan) Mink, and Chad (Melanie) Postell; one great grandchild, Lila Mae Postell; a brother-in-law, Bob Spaeth of Marion; and a niece Milena (Fred) Howald of Lima. He is also survived by two of his oldest friends, Jim Ward of Waldo and Doyle Cook of Marion.

Including his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by his brother, John; and sister, Jane (Darrell) Denman; and many friends he had accumulated in 86 years of life.

His family will greet friends from 12:30 - 2pm on Monday, December 30th, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St, Marion. Services honoring his life will immediately follow at the funeral home with burial following that at the Marion Cemetery. Lay Minister Mike Fogle will officiate at the home and cemetery and the Marion County United Veterans Council military honor guard will be present at burial, with Vern Heimlich playing taps for his dear friend.

His family would like to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to both Dr. Michael Hayes and his staff, and to Marion Manor for their tender care of Bill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ft. Morrow Fire District, 306 N. Marion St. Waldo, Ohio 43356 and American Legion Porter-Snyder Post 605, 367 W. Main St., Waldo, Ohio 43356.
