Daniel Preston Hitchcock
Daniel Preston Hitchcock died last evening, April 11, 1927, at 5:45 o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward F. Phelps, 430 East Third Street. Mr. Hitchcock suffered a shock May 29, 1926, and since that time has been confined to his bed.
Mr. Hitchcock was born in Gerry, July 11, 1843, the son of Zelotus and Sally Preston Hitchcock. With the exception of 13 years when he resided in Spottsylvania, Va., he spent his entire life at Gerry until coming to Corning 15 years ago.
February 27, 1861, he was married to Rosella Burge at Ellington. Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock marked their 66th wedding anniversary with a quiet celebration at the home of their daughter February 28 of this year.
Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock, Bertha M., wife of the Rev. Edward F. Phelps, pastor of the Free Methodist Church; and the Rev. B. F. Hitchcock, of Akron, N. Y. Besides his wife and children, Mr. Hitchcock is survived by six grandchildren.
Mr. Hitchcock was an active member of the Free Methodist Church and during his life held various church offices. He was a man of sterling Christian character and his upright life merited the high esteem in which he was held.
A prayer service will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward F. Phelps, 430 East Third Street, the Rev. H. W. Fish, of Elmira, officiating.
The body will then be taken to South Dayton, where the funeral will be held in the South Dayton Free Methodist Church Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock. The Rev. J. Irving Reese will officiate. Burial will be in South Dayton.
