Peter Joseph Hartmann son of the married couple, Peter and Margaretha Sontag Hartmann was born on May 1, 1828 in Bengen, Germany. He was 1 of 5 children, 3 sisters, Anna Christina, Anna Brigritta, Marie Theresia and 1 brother, Henricus. His father, Peter, was a successful tiller of soil and was a leading man of his section and for years held the position of Burgomaster in his district. In his adult years, Peter Josef aquired a thorought education graduating from the school of Surveying and Architecture. He became one of Germanys most successful Architects and Builder and among the many buildings that stand as monuments to his skill are the Water Works at Elberfeld, the Water Works at Dusseldorf, the Gas Works at Coblentz, the Gas Works at Kettwig and the Glass factory at Gerresheim.

On December 7, 1866 at 12:00 noon, Peter Josef married Mathilde Henrietta Louisa Kuefen in Dusseldorf, Germany. He was 22 and she was 18. To this union 5 children were born, only 2 survived, William C. and Henry J.
Peter Josef, Mathilde, Willy and Henry left the port of Rotterdam, Netherlands and sailed on the Amsterdam to the U.S. They arrived on January 17, 1881, in the immigration center of Castle Gardens in New York city. Their first home in the states was 816 5th Avenue in New York city. On February 5, 1891, they purchased 100 acres and a Greek Revival Mansion for $10,000.00 in West Hills, Long Island, New York. Peter Josef died their on April 13, 1896 of Pneumonia. He was 68 years old. His funeral was at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic church and the internment was in St. Patrick's cemetery.
