Mathilde was the daughter of Heinrick Kufer and Elisabeth Gertrud Petronella Wilhelmia Fausten. She was 1 of 6 children, 1 sister, Anna Marie and 4 brothers, Franz Wilhelm, Wilhelm Joseph, Carl Heinrich, Heinrich Joseph and 1 step-sister, Catharina Elizabeth from a first marriage of her Mother to Johann T. Weller.

Note: See husband Peter Josef Hartmann's bio.

On January 10, 1922, Mathilde sold the Greek Revival house and 100 acres more or less to Dorothy Whitney Straight for 6 figures. We estimate today, in 2012, the property is worth 7 figures per acre.

Mathilde died June 13, 1927 in Richmond Hills, Queen, New York, where she lived with her son, Henry J. Her internment is in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
