Marcelene Lavinia Thompson, age 87, of Lindale, passed away in the mid-evening hours of Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at Lindale Healthcare Center in Lindale. She was born on Feb. 25, 1926, in Nacogdoches, to Robert and Cora Stanfield Mosby; they preceded her in death. Marcelene earned her Master's in Education from Stephen F. Austin University. Her lifetime passion was teaching. Marcelene taught for 32 years at schools in Kingsville, Shiprock, N.M., Dayton, and finally retired from Tyler Independent School District where she finished her career teaching at Bell Elementary and Peete Elementary. Marcelene was one of the first teachers to volunteer to transfer to a minority school when public schools became integrated in the late 1950s.
Those who knew Marcelene will remember her, not only for her passion for teaching, but also for her deep love for her family. She married the love of her life, Arthur James "A.J." Thompson, on Sept. 2, 1946, in Nacogdoches. Together they spent the next 66 years raising a family and living a lifetime of memories; he preceded her in death on January 5, 2013. Marcelene was a proud and devoted mother and grandmother. She was an example and an inspiration to her children and grandchildren. Marcelene was a member of Cross Brand Cowboy Church in Lindale. She enjoyed various activities at the various churches her family attended over the years. In her free time, Marcelene enjoyed spending time outdoors and painting. She loved nature, birds and trees, and would make paintings of the many wonders the outdoors provided. Marcelene was a strong woman, devoted to her family and the countless children she spent so many hours molding.
Marcelene is survived by one daughter, Teresa Williamson and husband Robin, of Tyler; one granddaughter, Hollie Holquin and husband Sean, of Tucow, Ariz.; three great-grandsons, Nathan, Kyle and Daniel Holguin; and by two brothers-in-law, Marlin Thompson, of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Harry Thompson, of Houston.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Pam Thompson; two sisters, Zera Mosby and Sibyl Mosby Oliver; and by one brother, Lamar Mosby.
Services for Marcelene Thompson will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Lloyd James Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery with Al Oliver, Todd Thompson, Donnie Thompson, Scott Thompson, Howard Winwood and Jerry Warren serving as pallbearers. T.A. Mosby will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
