The son of Lewis & Mary A. (Miller) Beachler, in 1860 he was a shoemaker presumably living in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. His younger siblings, however, were then living there with the Charles J. Ehrhart family. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 13, 1864, as bugler for Co. I, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged by general order to date May 29, 1865. His brother Jacob served in the same regiment and was a bugler himself but with Co. K and C.

He married Anna C. Balsbaugh and fathered Clarence W. (b. 11/10/75), Hiram S. (b. 11/12/81), Valentine Balsbaugh (b. 09/22/82), and Mary E. (b. 03/30/84). In 1890, he was living in Middletown where he died from "mitral insufficiency" with "age" a contributing factor.
