The following is from page 98 of Earl Jacob Carlton's journal. I do not know if it is correct because it happened long before I was born.

Uncle Ridley played a trumpet with one hand and directed the band with the other hand. At one time, he was rated a better bandmaster than John Philip Sousa. In California, he once directed a band of over a thousand players. At that time, it was the largest group to ever play together. After his stroke, he wanted to give me a march he composed, but he was too sick to find it.
