Betty Lou Jones, daughter of the late state Sen. Ed Sample, died of cancer yesterday at San Diego Hospice. She was 75.
A native of San Diego and resident of Hillcrest, she was a member of Mission Hills First Congregational Church, where she was baptized and married. She was a longtime member of ZLAC Rowing Club on Mission Bay.
She graduated from San Diego High School and attended Mills College in Oakland as well as the University of Kansas, where her mother, the late Augusta Sample, was a member of the music faculty.
She married a Kansas City attorney, the late Ralph Jones, and lived in Kansas City for 10 years. She returned to San Diego in the 1950s after they were divorced.
She is survived by a daughter, Judith Westendorf of Baytown, Texas; two sons, Morgan Jones of Valencia City, Calif., and Jeffery Jones of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. Ed Levy and Edwina Sample; and five grandchildren.
At her request, her body will be cremated and scattered at sea. There will be no services.
