William, who worked as a police officer and later as a railroad conductor, was unmarried.

He enlisted at Suffolk as a Private in B. H. Smith's Company, Virginia Light Artillery (a/k/a 3rd Company, Richmond Howitzers) on 8 March 1862. He was wounded at Spotsylania Court House on 18 May 1864. He surrendered with his Company at Appomattox Court House and was paroled 9 April 1865.

William died at 1002 E. Broad Street of "Brain Disease", per Cemetery records. He is buried in his father's plot next to his brother Theodorick, who served briefly in the 1st Company, Richmond Howitzers before becoming surgeon of the 3rd Virginia Infantry.
