Physician. He was a member of "the Fighting McCooks", a family of 17 Ohioans who served the Union during the Civil War as soldiers, sailors, chaplains and physicians. he received a bachelor's degree from Maryland's Jefferson College, studied at Ohio's Willoughby Medical College and received a medical degree from Baltimore's College of Physicians and Surgeons, afterwards practicing medicine with his father in Lisbon, Ohio. His father and he later relocated to Pittsburgh. During the Civil War George L. McCook volunteered his services as a physician.
