She was born March 22, 1946, to Wilfred Joseph and Velma Cordelia (Hurt) Mertens in Liberal, Kan.
She was a 1964 graduate of Joint Rural High School No. 3 in Stark and later attended Wichita Business School.
She was a member of United Methodist Church of Platte City, Mo., and Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
She was a secretary at Platte County High School and was co-owner of Eggen's True Value Hardware Store in Platte City for eight years. She also served on the Platte City Chamber of Commerce board of directors.
She married Keith J. Eggen on June 19, 1965, in Walnut. He survives of the home.
Additional survivors include her mother, Velma Huffman of Hepler; three daughters, Debbie Heiser of Platte City, Jenny Van Slyke of Pasadena, Calif., and Amanda Eggen of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandchildren; and four sisters, Ruth Stevenson of Olathe, Mary Smith of Hepler, Sharon Miller of Parsons, and Jackie Casey of McKraken.
She was preceded in death by her father; one sister, Christie Mertens; and one brother, Norman "Pete" Peacock.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Platte City.
Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. in Walnut Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Rollins Funeral Home in Platte City. Arrangements are under the direction of Rollins Funeral Home.
