Death by execution, hanging, after serving 5 years, 5 months in prison for the murder of a Jerome, AZ policeman.
-------------------------------------------------
...the jury, in the case of N.B. Chavez, indicted for the murder of Charles E. King, returned a first degree verdict with the death penalty yesterday morning.
The crime for which Chavez was convicted is among the most atrocious and unprovoked murders in the criminal history of Northern Arizona. He shot and killed Charles E. King, night officer of Jerome, the night of August 27, 1910, between 8 and 9 o'clock. Officer King was shot in the back, the bullet lodging under his heart. He succumbed to the wound less that four days later. That Chavez also intended to kill a woman with whom he was living appears from the evidence introduced at his preliminary examination and the trial in the District Court.
Less than 2 hours preceding the shooting Chavez purchased a .38 caliber pistol and a box of cartridges from the manager of the T. F. Miller Co.s hardware department. He left the Miller store, going to the Wigwam, where he asked the proprietor for a drink. While walking out of the place, with the pistol and box of cartridges in his hand, he said he was going down to kill the woman. Arriving in front of the stone house, part of which was occupied as a residence by him and the woman, he fired three shots. This attracted the attention of Officer King, who was on duty a short distance away. Arriving in front of the stone house, which Chavez had entered, Mr. King stopped to ask a Mexican girl who was doing the shooting, when Chavez fired through an open window, from inside the house, the bullet striking the girl in the leg. A second bullet, fired almost immediately by Chavez, entered Mr. King's back a half inch to the right of the spinal column, ranging upward and lodging between the skin and the fourth rib in front. Mr. King fell, and was assisted by an eye-witness to the shooting. He was taken to the United Verde Hospital, where he died as a result of the wound, August 31.
Soon after the shooting, Chavez came out of the house, and seeing a patient looking out of the window of an upper story of the hospital, raised his weapon and fired at him, the bullet striking a brick at the side of the window.
He was arrested a few minutes later, near the hospital, by Fred Hawkins, Marshal of Jerome, who found the weapon in his pocket, with five chambers loaded.
Since his arrest, Chavez has shown no compunction for his crime. He is said to be a hardened criminal. He was convicted in this county in 1901 on the charge of assault with intent to commit murder, and served five years in the Territorial prison. While the jury was deliberating on his case, Thursday night, he talked incoherently in his cell, but the substance of his remarks are not known.

--------------------------------------------------
Deeming it expedient to get Chavez out of Jerome at the earliest opportunity in view of the sentiment of that city that he should be dealt with by the people instead of by the slow process of the law, the would-be murderer of Officer Charles King, was taken secretly to Jerome Junction Sunday by Chief of Police Hawkins, and given into custody of Deputy Sheriff Keeler, who lodged him safely in the county jail here. Chavez appeared to appreciate this consideration, while on the other hand, it was reported there was keen disappointment expressed that the would-be murderer was taken from Jerome unharmed.
No criminal act ever committed in that section has so thoroughly and generally aroused the people as the one of Saturday night........Many people were wrought to a high pitch and the more the matter was discussed the more determined were the many to adopt the lynch method. Under these extraordinary circumstances, it was deemed to get Chavez out of town....
