John Greenway Richards was born in Waltham, MA. The family moved to Washington when he was a child. He graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma and attended the University of Washington. He became a draftsman with Heath, Gove and Bell architects in Tacoma, and worked with the firm for 10 years. In 1937 he became a partner in Lea, Pearson and Richards Architects. The well-known firm was known for their designs of banks, schools, and religious buildings. He became a member of the American Institute of Architects in 1942, and retired in 1980.
