He was born at Orofino July 23, 1919, to John and Naomia Sammons. He grew up on a farm near Orofino and graduated from Orofino High School in 1937.
Sammons was employed in woods work until entering the U.S. Army in June 1941. He worked on the Alcan Highway between the United States and Alaska while in the Army.
Sammons married Cora Lee Price at Lewiston, March 22, 1943. She survives him at the family home at Orofino.
He then served with the 145th Engineer Battalion in the Normandy, Ardennes and Central European campaigns as a Cater- pillar operator. Following his discharge in 1945, he returned to Orofino, working as a bulldozer operator for logging operations.
In 1947 he moved to Oregon, working there for seven years before returning to Orofino in 1954.
He had since lived at Orofino. Sammons enjoyed gold prospecting and fishing.
Survivors in addition to his wife include a son, Robert Sammons Jr. of Lewiston; a daughter, Arlene Ball of Lewiston; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Pine Hills Funeral Home at Orofino. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Weseman Cemetery at Orofino.
