He was born on Oct. 28, 1930, in Burlington, the son of Madeline (Barnes) and stepfather, Stanley Filipeak.
He was employed at the University of Vermont and formerly lived in Shelburne.
Bernard served his country honorably with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict in 1950.
He later enlisted in the Vermont National Guard in 1953 and transferred to the U.S. Army until discharge in 1955.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, in St. Joseph Co-Cathedral.
Spring interment will be in Shelburne Village Cemetery.
