Joseph W. Aberdale 1938 - 2014 Housatonic

Joseph William Aberdale, 75, of 22 Linda Lane, passed away on Wednesday, January 1 at Berkshire Medical Center.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Dolores Twarog Aberdale. The couple celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary last April 28th.

Joseph is also survived by four children. His eldest daughter Debra Marie Aberdale resides in Clifton Park, New York. His eldest son Joseph Andrew Aberdale and daughter-in-law Carole Lynne Aberdale live in Housatonic. His youngest son Andrew Anthony Aberdale and daughter-in-law LindaLeigh Richert Aberdale reside in Acton. His youngest daughter Suzanne Marie Aberdale and daughter-in-law Kathryn Aberdale live in Coconut Creek, Florida. Joseph was especially proud of his three grandchildren: Andrew Anthony Aberdale, II of Acton; Kayla Lynne Aberdale and Joseph Francis Aberdale of Housatonic.

Born on June 6, 1938 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Joseph was the eldest son of the late Joseph John Aberdale (1909-2005) and the late Helen Zaranek Aberdale (1911-1971). Joseph had two siblings. His sister Lorriane succumbed to influenza in 1936, and Joseph's brother Terry Aberdale lives with his wife Barbara in Springfield.

Joseph graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1956. He received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Hampden College of Pharmacy in Willimansette in 1960.

Joseph also served in the National Guard.

Joseph married his former classmate and true love, Dolores Twarog, on April 28, 1962, in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Springfield. Together they had become proprietors of Housatonic Pharmacy in October of 1961, when they were engaged to wed. Joseph established another business, A&J Sporting Goods, in 1961. Housatonic Pharmacy eventually transformed into Aberdale's, and Joseph and Dolores were very proud to celebrate their 50th year in business in 2011. Joseph continued to be heavily involved in both of the businesses he initiated, and he was very gratified to see his life's work continue as his eldest son Joseph Andrew has greatly expanded both businesses in recent years.

Joseph, and his son Joe, both believe deeply in the Housatonic community and try to give back by sponsoring youth events and donations to local charities. Joseph served as a volunteer in The Housatonic Hose Company beginning in 1961. In 1976, The Housatonic Hose Company and Hope Fire Company were joined to the Great Barrington Fire Department. As a Captain of the Great Barrington Fire Department, Joseph retired from service due to health concerns. Joseph also served as Deputy Sheriff of Berkshire County for many years. He was a member in the Housatonic Rod and Gun Club, and third degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Mt. Everett Council #513.

Joseph's in-laws were the late Andrew Twarog (1907-1974) and the late Stella Kiluk Twarog (1913-1974). The firstborn Twarog child, Andrew, died in infancy. Joseph's sister-in-law Joan Twarog Szpakanik passed in 2000. Joseph's sister-in-law Maryann Twarog Enderle passed in 2009; Maryann's husband Joseph Enderle, Jr. resides in Feeding Hills.
