His middle given name has often been reported as Newell (an old family surname); however, it is recorded as Newton on his birth certificate, made out by Mrs. E.L. Bridges, a longtime Midwife and friend of the family, who attended many of his mother's deliveries. His sister, Mary Elizabeth Bates, recorded it as Newell in her personal papers.

Ed is a son of Francis Sara Benoist and William Walton Bates of Brady Texas.

He served in the U. S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS Norton Sound (AV11) as Carpenter's Mate 3 Class. He was honorably discharged 7 June 1946.

He married Shirley Ann Lewman 20 June 1959 at Cloverdale, Sonoma, California. They lived at Willits, Mendocino, California at the beginning of their marriage. They had two sons, Gary & Gerald.

After the death of Ed, his wife married Allan Peter Hess, who had a son and three daughters by a former marriage.
