Susan was a driven woman, who understood that hard work and dedication would allow her to go far. She started babysitting at 7 for a quarter. However, Susan's true calling was in nursing. She started her career at South Miami Hospital. When her husband was stationed in Morocco, she served as a Red Cross volunteer at a Clinic. She said she was especially proud of this position as the Red Cross formed a paid position for her based off her volunteer work at the clinic so that she could earn a paycheck. After Jim left the Navy, they moved back to the family farm near Alvadore, OR. She worked in a nursing home until she took 5 years off to start a family.
Susan returned to full time work at Sacred Heart Hospital in February 1979. For the next 34 years, she held many positions, primarily in the dialysis department, working for Sacred Heart, Oregon Dialysis Services and Fresenius Medical Care. She worked until January 2013 and officially retired in August 2013.
She served in several organizations including: PEO Chapter CA, Eastern Star Thursday Club, Alvadore Christian Church, Women for Agriculture, Soroptimist ESA, and Red Cross,
Susan was diagnosed with Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) in November 2012, which changed to ALS in January 2013. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She made her family a priority, taking care of the needs of those she loved above all else.
She was preceded in death by her parents (Ida Kay Hollenbeck and Harry Cecil Hudson Jr.), her stepfather (Tom Hollenbeck), and her infant sister (Rosalee Hudson).
She is survived by her husband: James Drew; her children (spouses are listed in parenthesis): Christina Bowman, Kirsten (Tom) Chambers, Owen (Tera) Drew, Jaimee (Bryan) Manley, and her ex son-in-law that she retained as a son Brad Bowman; eight grandchildren; her sisters: Rochelle Cartmell, Linda Dorsey, Liane Anglin and Beth Miles; and her brothers: Earnest Hollenbeck, and Eric Hollenbeck.
