Charles Joseph Kunkel was born out of wedlock to Clara E. Shaw who later married his biological father Edward Cass. He was adopted in February 15, 1877 by Lawrence and Theresa Kunkel. It is said that the Cass family who were very wealthy gave the Kunkel's $500.00 for Charles' education. Out of bitterness Charles did not have a formal education. He was a metal spinner and was injured when the wheel spun off and hit him in the jaw. He later died of his injuries Aneyrysm of splenic artery ruptured dissecting.
