Asheville - Nathaniel Lewis Bowman, Jr., a lifelong resident of Asheville, peacefully entered into eternal glory on Saturday, December 29, 2013.


He was born on April 30, 1925 to Nathaniel L. Bowman, Sr. and Violet Wright Bowman.


The fourth of eight children, Nathaniel became the big brother to Edna Bowman Prudhomme (Ted), Richard Bowman, Raymond (Lois) Bowman and Gloria Bowman Lee (Clarence).


He was predeceased by his parents and his wife of 59 years, Jeanne Walker Bowman. He was also predeceased by sisters, Josephine Bowman, Mary Louise Bowman, Juanita Bowman and Edna Prudhomme.


A 1944 graduate of Stephens-Lee High School, Nathaniel lived briefly in New York where he attended Barber School and later entered and served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. After discharge from military service, he returned to Asheville and worked at the VA Hospital for over 30 years. Nathaniel was a member of Basilica of St. Lawrence where he served as an usher for over 15 years. He was a member of Asheville's historical Carlton Social Club.


Left to cherish his memory are his four children, Teresa Bowman and Mary Bowman Robinson (John) of Charlotte, Nathaniel Bowman, III of Asheville and Gregory Bowman (Penny) of Greensboro; his grandchildren, Taylor Bowman, Gregory L. Bowman, II and Nicholas Robinson. He is also survived by brothers, Raymond (Lois) Bowman of Washington, DC, Richard Bowman of Asheville and sister, Gloria Lee (Charles) of Whittier, CA. In addition to numerous nieces and nephews.


Services will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m. at Basilica of St. Lawrence. Burial will be in Violet Hill Cemetery.
