In 1862, he married Mary Jane Arthur of St Breock, Cornwall. Together, they had six children: William Henry Rowe, Eliza Jane Rowe, John Rowe, Mary Ann Rowe, Arthur Rowe, and an unnamed daughter. The family came to the United States, perhaps in stages, in 1866, where they took up residence in Rockaway Township, Morris County, New Jersey. Sometime before 1880, they moved to the company town of Central Mine in Keweenaw County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Central was a popular destination for Cornish copper miners, who comprised the majority of the small town's population.
Mary Jane died of complications from childbirth in 1883, along with the couple's week-old daughter. Henry subsequently wed Sarah Manley, who came over from Cornwall to marry him. They apparently found each other to be incompatible and divorced shortly after their marriage in 1884.
Henry's third wife was Jane Broad of Towednack, Cornwall, England. They wed on August 11, 1887, shortly after her immigration. Jane had a daughter, Emily Jane Broad, from a previous relationship, who became Henry's stepdaughter. Central Mine closed in the 1890s and some years later Henry and Jane migrated to the bustling area surrounding Calumet.
Jane preceded Henry in death on January 31, 1906 as a result of chronic nephritis. Henry died five years later in Hancock at the age of 74, apparently of a stroke, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery next to two of his previous wives.
He was the natural grandfather of Beatrice Jane Rowe, Wilfred Rowe, and William Henry Rowe, Jr., as well as many others who are not listed on this website.
