Dorothy "Dot" Laylon Berndt, 94, of Williamsport, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at Williamsport Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family.

Born July 20, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Melvin W. and Martha Reaser Laylon.

Dorothy and her husband, the late Irving A. (Bud) Berndt Jr. were married June 8, 1940, at the former St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsport, with the Rev. Howard R. Gold officiating.

She attended Montoursville Grade School, West York High School and graduated from Ephrata High School in 1937. She was also a graduate of Dickinson Seminary (now Lycoming College), Class of 1939.

Following graduation she joined the staff of the first radio station in Williamsport (WRAK) as secretary and musician. In 1954 she became associated with Little League Baseball, Inc., as a coordinator and in 1982 became the first archivist of the Peter J. McGovern Little League Museum. She also served as chairperson of Hospitality and Transportation during the World Series until 2002. Dot was an active musician in the community, serving as organist for many local churches and in later years she played for services at the Maneval Funeral Home. She was well-known as an accompanist for the Consistory Choir, musical productions for the Community Theater, along with individual musicians, groups and organizations.

As a retiree, she continued to volunteer her time to the Lycoming County Historical Museum, was the first radio reader for the North Central PA Blind Association radio station, registrar for the Red Cross bloodmobiles and archivist for the former St. Paul Lutheran Church and her new church, St. Mark's Lutheran. She also served on council and played the organ at both places of worship, along with many other churches in the community.

Dorothy also served as president of The Williamsport Home Residents Council, secretary of the Williamsport Clio Club, life member of the Williamsport Music Club, Lycoming County Historical Museum, Community Concert Association and a former member of AARP, American Guild of Organists and Business and Professional Women. She organized and was a pianist for the ABC Singers at the Williamsport Home Apartments.

Dot was a gregarious person. She loved people. She was always busy with a project, with her latest being organizing her family archives. She loved music, crafts, sewing patches for church quilts, making baby blankets for friends' little ones, cooking, baking, time on the computer, shopping and traveling. Her most recent trip was to celebrate her 75th class reunion in York.

But the love of her life was her family, Christmas, birthdays, picnics and daily phone calls. She was very proud of them.

Her surviving family include a daughter, Barbara Horn, of Williamsport. Grandchildren include Stacey (Michael) Drawbaugh, of South Williamsport, Robert Bergman Jr., of Montoursville, Brian Horn, of Williamsport, and Sarah Horn, of Montoursville. Great-grandchildren include Tessa Drawbaugh, of Williamsport, Michael Drawbaugh Jr., of South Williamsport, Robert Bergman, of Williamsport, Conner Shultz and father Mark, of DuBoistown, Elizabeth, Daniel and Matthew Horn, of Bellevue, Neb.; three nieces and their families, Patricia (Austin) Robinson, of Canton, Ga., Debra (Lane) Prior, of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Cynthia Racette, of Lakeland, Fla.; two close cousins, Ani Apelian, of Williamsport and namesake Dorothy Rozelle, of Portland, Maine; along with many first and second cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Bud (1988); daughter, Nancy Berndt Bergman (1974); son, Stephen (2010); granddaughter, Pamela Bergman Shultz (2011); and sisters, Margaret Laylon Kalt (2002) and Evelyn Mae Laylon (1918).

A memorial service will be held 2p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 142 Market St., Williamsport, with Pastor Kenneth Elkin officiating. Visitation will be noon to 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations be made to American Red Cross, Lycoming County Chapter, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Daniel's Closet or a charity of your choosing. Arrangements are being handled by James C. Maneval Funeral Home, Ltd., "A Life Celebration Home," 500 W. Fourth St., Williamsport.
