Florence Ellen Harris, 92, of Girard, died at 5:10 a.m., Sunday, January 5, 2014 in the Girard Medical Center in Girard, Kansas.

She was born January 17, 1921 in Hepler, Kansas, a daughter of Marion and Gertrude (Fager) Westhoff. She grew up and attended schools in Hepler.

Ellen married Bud Leon Harris on August 4, 1938 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Walnut, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 21, 2013 after 75 years of marriage.

They lived in Idaho and Oregon from 1947 until 1954. They owned and operated Harris Grocery in Hepler from 1957 until 1978 and they owned and operated Harris Ammonia Service in Hepler from 1962 until 1996 before moving to Girard in 2002.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Girard, the Kansas Cowbelles, now Kansas Cattlewomen, Hepler Gem Seekers, and Hepler Homemakers E.H.U.

Ellen enjoyed her family, cooking, baking, candy making, cross stitching and quilting.

Survivors include her sons William L. Harris and his wife Patricia of Rossville, Kansas; Donald Lee Harris and his wife Penny of Neillsville, Wisconsin; Larry Harris and his wife Lois of Duncan, Oklahoma; daughters Sandra K. Bird of Kansas City, Missouri; Jean Nichols and her friend Ron Gates of Girard; son-in-law Bernard O'Brien and his wife Beverly of Hepler; seventeen grandchildren; forty-three great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; sisters Patty Lucas of Omaha, Nebraska; Doris Prickett of Overland Park, Kansas; and a brother Bobby Westhoff of Parsons, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine O'Brien, on July 10, 1988; a granddaughter, Danielle Lynn Harris, in April of 1982; a son-in-law, Charles Bird, on March 26, 1994; four sisters; two brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2014 at St. Michael's Church in Girard with Father Roger Lumbre as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery at Walnut.

The Rosary will be at 6:00 p.m. Friday, January 10, 2014 at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard where the family will receive friends following the Rosary.

Memorials are suggested to the Hepler Hustlers 4-H Club and these may be left at the church or the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.

Friends may call after 10:30 a.m., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard.
