OBITUARY-
Edward Daniel Risius, age 83, of Austin, died Monday evening, Nov. 7, 2005, at Austin Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 12, 1922, in Austin, Minn., to Jacob and Hattie (Bestje) Risius. Ed went to elementary school in rural Brownsdale, Minn., and graduated from Hayfield High School.
He entered the United States Army during World War II and served from December 1942 until February 1946. A member of the Ninth Division, he was in the European Theatre for 19 months. He was wounded in Germany for which he was awarded a Purple Heart medal. In the United States, he was in the 103rd Cactus Division.
After his discharge he went into the trucking business and retired in 1987. After retirement he worked part time for many area auto dealers, driving cars for delivery to other cities.
Ed married Darlene (Pieper) Skolte. They were later divorced. In May of 1987 he married Arlys Hellickson Gilbert in Austin.
Ed was a member of the Elks, American Legion and St. Olaf Lutheran Church. He enjoyed bowling and manicuring his yard. A kind and gentle man who was loved and respected by all who knew him, Ed loved his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Arlys Risius, Austin, Minn.; seven stepchildren: Cheryl Christopherson, Austin, Minn.; Robert (Kathy) Gilbert, Omaha, Neb.; Michael (Diane) Gilbert, Austin, Minn.; Susan (Randy) Severson, Austin, Minn.; Jane McFarland (Pete Lange), Austin, Minn.; John (Florence) Skolte, Owatonna, Minn.; Joyce Skolte, Marietta, Ga.; 14 step grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; sisters: Minnie Risius, Austin, Minn.; Frieda Ouderkirk, Austin, Minn.; brother, Harry (Evelyn) Risius, Bricelyn, Minn.; several special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Hattie Risius; one brother, Johannes "Joker" Risius; three sisters: Ida Risius, Ann Clingman and Esther Krull.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Austin with the Rev. David Beckstrom officiating. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin with military rites by American Legion Post 91. Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home, Austin from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.
The family prefers memorials to St. Olaf Lutheran Church.
