Joseph Gallagher, 90, Minot, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, in a Kenmare hospital.
Joseph Henry Gallagher was born on Feb. 26, 1923, a son of William and Helen (Seipp) Gallagher, in Crosby. He was raised and educated in Crosby, where he was active in football and track. For extra money Joseph would help dig graves. He also worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps camp between his junior and senior years of high school.
On Nov. 30, 1942, Joseph enlisted in the Navy with his brother, Emmanuel. He was stationed on USS Wilhout DE-397 during World War II. Joe received his high school diploma via correspondence courses in 1945. He proudly served his country until he was honorably discharged on Feb. 4, 1946. Following his discharge, Joseph attended the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks, receiving his bachelor of science degree in accounting. While in college, Joe was active with the boxing team. Following his graduation, Joe worked for the Farmers Union in Crosby, managing the Crosby Cooperative Credit Union and Insurance.
On Aug. 7, 1950, Joseph was united in marriage to Lucille Kostek at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Crosby. They moved to Williston, where Joe worked for a public accounting firm for two years. He then took a job with Seco Inc, a heavy truck/equipment business. Joe began his career with the Internal Revenue Service with his first assignment in Fargo, transferring to Minot in 1960. He would remain with the IRS until his retirement in 1983. In his retirement, Joe continued to work with the Service Corps of Retired Executives program. Lucille died Aug. 25, 2012.
He was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Minot, where he was a lay minister, lector and principal with the CCD program for over 20 years. He was also a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus,
Joseph is survived by: sons, Michael, Jeffrey, Daniel and Randy Gallagher; daughter, Margaret Peterson; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; brothers, James and Vincent Gallagher; sister, Winnafred Marx; brother-in-law, Larry Kostek; and numerous nieces, nephews and several cousins also survive.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lucille; and siblings, Anthony, Daniel, Emmanuel, Cletus and Charles.
Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot
