Willard was born on Dec. 20, 1912, in the Olson homestead home 8 miles south of Regent. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Regent High School in 1931. He attended college in Dickinson graduating in 1935.
Willard married Julia Lien on Aug. 9, 1935, and the two of them taught in rural schools for several years after they were married. In 1942 they settled on the homestead farm where they lived until health forced a move in 1996. They moved to an assisted living home in Bismarck for one year and then moved to Connell, Wash., to be near a daughter. Willard’s wife, Julia, died on May 5, 1998, of this year, and since that time, he had stayed with his grandson, Jon Sperl, and wife, Sandra.Willard loved the land and the farm life, and also was active in thecommunity of Regent, serving on several boards including the school board and the co-op board. The consolidating of the rural school of Bowman and
Hettinger Counties into the Regent school system was accomplished during the time he was on the school board.
Because of his love and respect of the land, he was always anxious to try the suggestions of the Soil Conservation Service, winning several awards.
For several years, Willard raised and sold registered Angus stock. He enjoyed taking them to sales, and visiting about them and always noticed Angus cattle wherever he traveled.
Willard often mentioned in his later years that he had been privileged to live in a marvelous age, being able to see the coming of the car, airplane and electrifying of the farm, and even the landing of men on the moon.
