Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Tuesday, August 15, 1967, page 3:
  Thomas Henry Downing, 79, of Gillespie, father of Mrs. Mildred Manville and William R. Downing of Edwardsville, died at 3 p.m. Monday at John Cochran Veterans Hospital in St. Louis. The family home is at 608 South Macoupin St.
  A retired Illinois Terminal Railroad engineer, he was a native of Lincoln and son of William D. and Sarah Jane (Semple) Downing. He was born Jan. 30, 1889.
  Surviving besides his daughter and son here are his wife, the former Bertha Clark [married Feb. 22, 1925]; another son, Thomas W. Downing of Pekin; eight grandchildren, and three grandchildren.
  Visitation will be at the Union Funeral Home in Gillespie after 5 p.m. Wednesday until 2 p.m. Thursday when services will be held. Elder Francis Butcher of the Church of the Latter Day Saints at Sawyerville will have charge.
  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at Staunton.
