Evelyn M. Hockemeyer, 96, of Midland, passed happily into the arms of Jesus with family at her side, on Jan. 5, 2013.
Evelyn was born in Detroit, on May 29, 1916, to August and Clara (Kaschefsky) Draves. Evelyn was one of 10 children. As a young girl she loved school and was very proud of winning a statewide spelling bee when she was in elementary school.
Evelyn moved to Midland with her parents and siblings when her father retired from Ford Motor. She met her future husband, Elmer W. Hockemeyer and they were married on Jan. 6, 1934, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Midland. Evelyn's early married life was spent as a farm wife helping her husband run their farm in Midland. She was the proud mother of five children. Her family was very important to her and they spent many fun times with her siblings and their children. She loved flowers and spent her free time in her garden and reading.
Evelyn and Elmer moved to Zephyrhills, Fla. upon his retirement and she lived there until she moved back to Michigan in 1991. In 1993 she moved to Riverside Apartments in Midland and in 2006 moved to Pine Crest Farms, also in Midland until her death. Evelyn was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend and will be greatly missed by all.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; daughters, Leona and Carolyn and son, Alan. Also preceding her were brothers, Howard and Fenton; and sisters, Norma, Phyllis, Maida and Marvel. She is survived by sons, Larry (Barbara) and Robert (Dollie); grandchildren, Debi (Brad), Troy (Linda) and Demara (Jim); 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Roy Draves, Milton Draves and Delores Lemke; and many nieces and nephews.
