James was born June 15, 1873, son of Archibald Richard "Richey" and Mary McKee Adair. He married Beulah L Harding on March 22, 1895 in Clark County, SD. They were parents of Mary Adair born and died in 1895; and of Lester Adair born in 1896 and died on Dec 10, 1896. They divorced.

He married Anna Marie Frederica Riemath on Dec 25, 1919, in Redfield, SD. They were parents to James William Adair II and Ramsey McKee Adair (May 21,1930-Feb 3, 2014), Beatrice Birch.

He worked in grocery business. They moved to Firesteel in the early 1930's. He suffered a stroke.
