Former H.E.B. Official, P. W. Moomaw Jr., Dies
Paul W. Moomaw Jr., 57, died at his home, 431 Del Mar, Thursday. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today in Cage-Mills Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ted Spencer, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Seaside Memorial Park.
A former purchaser for H. E. Butt Stores, Moomaw had worked with the United Fund, the Coastal Bend Chapter of the American Red Cross, and had been a director in Halfway House and the Coastal Bend Council on Alcoholism. In 1966 he was cited by the Navy for helping tape holiday messages for servicemen overseas.
A native of Arkansas, he moved to Corpus Christi with his parents in 1929. His father, Paul W. Moomaw Sr., operated a pharmacy near Spohn Hospital for many years.
After attending the University of Texas, he volunteered for service in World War II, entering as a private. He was graduated from the Air Corps Officer Candidate School in 1942 and served in Europe and the Far East. His service career continued through 1950-51 when he was an intelligence officer and assistant military attache in the Far East. He was discharged as a major in the Air Force Reserve in 1951.
Moomaw then returned to Corpus Christi and joined the H. E. Butt Stores where he was employed about 15 years. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Clifford A. Wallace, Corpus Christi; a son, Paul Moomaw III, Boulder, Colo.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Jonelyn Payne, Corpus Christi, and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be R. G. Gerber, Joe Bluntzer, Ira Phelps, Hank Stence, Charles Manning and Frank Adams.
