He was born on July 29, 1921 in Tuskegee, Oklahoma, a son of Dude and Verley Cooper Hammons. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. He married Marie L. Heck on Jan. 2, 1949 in Bloomington. She survives.
He is also survived by four sons, Darrell Hammons, Mike (Bonnie) Hammons, Bob (Janice) Hammons and Brian (Rebecca) Hammons; one daughter, Judy Scott; two sisters, Etta Conaway and Ruby Heck and nine grandchildren.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran where he served in the Military Police. He was a former manager and supervisor for Hen House Interstate, retiring in 1985.
