Irene B. Mozden 1930 - 2014 Palmer

Irene B. Mozden, 83, retired teacher in the Business Dept. for 25 years at West Springfield High School, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at Lifecare Center of Wilbraham.

Born in Three Rivers, she was the daughter of the late Piotr and Rozalia (Lajzer) Mozden. She graduated from Sts. Peter Paul Parochial Grammar School and was a 1948 graduate of Palmer High School.

She then moved to Washington, D.C. and graduated from the Washington School for Secretaries in 1950. Moving to Boston, she worked at the then Boston 5 Cents Savings Bank in the mortgage department as a foreclosure supervisor, from 1950 to 1964, when she was accepted as a Papal Volunteer for Latin America (PAVLA), under the sponsorship of Cardinal Cushing and the Diocese of Boston. She first spent 4 months in Mexico for an intensive study of the Spanish language and learning the culture of Latin America. She arrived at her assigned area of work in Sicuani, Peru, South America for Christmas in 1964. In Sicuani, located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, she organized and managed both a Consumer Cooperative and a Credit Cooperative. She served in this capacity until her departure at the end of 1967.

She took up residence in West Springfield in early 1968 and worked at the Springfield Institution for Savings, both on a part-time and a full-time basis, while pursuing the continuation of her studies at American International College, where she received her B.S. degree in Business Administration in 1972. Her teaching career with West Springfield started in 1972.

She was a member of the West Springfield Education Association, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the National Education Association, and a member of the Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association. She was a communicant of Divine Mercy Parish, Three Rivers, and Sacred Heart Church. Springfield.

Irene leaves 2 sisters, Genevieve Lopata of Three Rivers, and Rose Tyburski of Thorndike.

She was predeceased by her sister, Bertha Walukiewicz; and her brothers, Stanley, Dr. Walter, Stephen, John, Dr. Peter, and Joseph. She also leaves over 35 nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be Wednesday, January 15, 2014 from the MOTYKA FUNERAL HOME, 2186 Main St., Three Rivers, MA beginning at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial in Divine Mercy Parish at 10 a.m. There will be a calling hour Wednesday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. preceding the church service. Burial will be in St. Anne's Cemetery, Three Rivers.

Donations may be made in Irene's memory, to a charity of one's choice, or to Boston Medical Center, 1 Boston Med Place, Boston, MA 02118, in memory of her brother Dr. Peter Mozden.
