Second Lieutenant Virgil L. Blevins, of Granite City, Illinois, was killed on January 23, 1943, when an Army medium bomber crashed in a wooded area while on a routine training flight near Great Falls, South Carolina, and burst into flames. Five other fliers were killed in the same accident. Lt. Blevins had been married just three weeks previously to Miss June Rutledge.
