Kathleen Ellen Bates, age 59, of Providence, Fla. died Tuesday, Jan. 14, in the Select Specialty Hospital, Gainesville, Fla. following a long illness. She was born in Raleigh, N.C. and had resided in Lake City and Providence, Fla. for over 50 years. She worked as a classification officer with the Columbia Correctional Facility and was a dispatcher with the Lake City office of the Florida Highway Patrol with a total of 28 years of service with the State of Florida. She was a graduate of Columbia High School and earned a degree in criminology from the University of Florida. She was member of the Hopeful Baptist Church and enjoyed cooking and helping with many church functions.
